@gilmorecrazy15 Are you asking if you are required to enter your rent to get the rent credit?  No, you are not required to enter it.

On your federal return you do not have to claim the rent that you paid at all and skipping over it will make no difference on your personal return.

Some state returns may have different rules, though.  You will see that when you come to it.

RENT

There is not a rent deduction or credit on your Federal return.  If your state has anything for renters you will be prompted to enter your rent info when you complete your state return.  As far as I know, the states that have anything for rent are Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington DC, and Wisconsin.

If, however, you mean business rent paid; yes, you must declare it.

I’m talking about the state return where it says do you pay rent… we moved in to this house back in July of 2021 and it would only change the state return by $100. I’m in indiana. I’m just not sure it’s worth it, considering I’d have to get landlords info and all that fun stuff. It is just rent for living in our house..
