I sold my rental home in 2016, why is there no depreciation for the time it was a fair market rental?

Home was rented for 5 months, then personal use for 4 months, then sold for a loss.

According to IRS Publication 527 on rental property, "Property placed in service and disposed of (or taken out of business use) in the same year" is not eligible for depreciation.
