1099-B Unclaimed Property unclear how to proceed

Last August 2019 I received a check for some unclaimed property I had in the form of stock shares I received through my employer in 2012.

The 1099-B form doesn't include all the information you normally see when you sell shares through your regular broker. For example these 1099-B forms I got from the State of Delaware:

  • Does not include a date acquired
  • Does not include a date sold or disposed
  • Does not say if short or long term
  • Does not include a cost base
  • Box 5 says it is a noncovered security
  • Box "Applicable check box Form 8949" has an "X"

However I have proof from an old broker statement that all these were acquired in Dec 2012 so I guess I could use that date. I also asked check with the State of Delaware and they said they sold the shares in July 2018. I submitted my claim in 2019 and received the money in Aug 2019, I don't understand why they sold the shares in 2018 but they said they have already double checked that's the date when they sold the shares (I guess they thought I would never submit a claim). The problem is the website is not letting me enter a date from 2018 in the disposed/sold date into the system. I don't know how to proceed..... I could put the date I got the check which is Aug 2019. Since we already know these were long term stocks (Acquired in 2012) not sure if it matters what date you enter in the sold date.  My old statement also have the cost base, so that's what I'm using as well.

Please let me know how file this.

Thanks in advance!

1099-B Unclaimed Property unclear how to proceed

You need to report this in 2019, since you received the money in 2019.

You should use the date you received the money as the date sold, and the broker statement for your basis.
