Filing a joint return. Both I and my wife received 1099-Bs but there does not seem to be a way to specify whether the 1099 is for me or my wife in using the TT Step by Step entry so all 1099 Bs get assigned as my income. This makes a difference when we do our State taxes.
The 1099-DIV and INT allow you to attribute the income to either one in the Step-by-Step mode.
Would TurboTax recognize my wife's income if I overwrite my SSN with her social on the TT Form?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Unfortunately, transactions reported on Schedule D from Form 1099-B have no designation for taxpayer or spouse. The activity is assigned to the first name on the tax return. See TurboTax Best answer.
What state tax return are you working in? Within the state tax return are you able to designate the income as belonging to one spouse or the other?
Yes,
I have to attribute income on my VA state taxes to either myself or my wife
since there is a spousal tax credit based on her income
My wife received the 1099-B with her SSN but TT assigns it to me since
I have no way of making the assignment although I can for 1099-DIV and INT.
In the Virginia program, as you go through, there is a section to allocate income between the spouses. This is for the Spouse Tax Adjustment, which is a state thing. Here's the screen:
