1099-B Example for Crypto Currency

I keep getting errors on my Crypto Currency transactions in TurboTax Home & Business (Desktop).  I entered each of my sales which generated a 1099-B worksheet.  The errors are related to the following questions:

  • Was cost or other basis reported to the IRS on Form 1099-B (or substitute)?
  • Reported type of gain / loss?

I've tried various combinations for the first question (Yes, No or blank) with either the correct term (short or long) or "No Report" selected.

What's the right answer to both questions to allow me to get past the error checker and e-file?

I played around with it some more and found that "blank" to the first question and "no report" to the type of capital gain allowed the return to be transmitted.

you should be entering these under Sales Category C or F

(no 1099-B at all)

the type depends on your holding period (Long term or Short Term).
