We have a second home we’ve owned for about 5 years.  It’s never been a rental property, but following a recent hurricane, we’re renting it out to a family displaced from their home for what should be about 6 months if all goes well with repairs to their home.  The rental period will span 2018-2019. After that, we don’t intend to rent it out again. Should we treat it as a vacation home rented out for part of the year, or as a conversion to a rental property that goes back to being a non-rental property after they move back into their house?

You can add the income in the Less Common Income section, miscellaneous income. No need to convert to rental property.
