Question

Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available.

I submitted my tax return on February 17, 2023. I do not have tax or refund due. I had to file due to Marketplace (ACA) health insurance. It has been more than 21 days since filing, but the status says: "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available." Any idea why? When should I expect the return to be processed? Thanks.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2022 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

    To track your state refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

OR——if you filed by mail, expect a long wait.   It is taking the very backlogged IRS six to nine months to process mailed returns.   Until a human opens your envelope and enters the data into the system, nothing will even show up on the refund site, so you will have to be very patient.

Both my Federal and State returns were accepted within a few minutes based on the notifications I received from TurboTax. Where is my refund page says that it was received by the IRS. My state tax was debited to my bank account within a few days. However, my Federal return has still not been processed. I understand that TurboTax does not have any control over or visibility into the status of the return. However, I was wondering what the expected processing time is when there is no tax or refund due, to make sure that it does not indicate possible errors or missing information.

There is no timetable for when a return is in processing. The IRS pulled your return off the line to look at it. The process could be simple and take a few hours or complicated and take months.

A delay could simply mean they are backed up so you should not assume a longer processing time means a bigger issue.

    Keep checking Where’s My Refund?

If you are experiencing some type of economic hardship you can reach out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Keep in mind, they are backed up as well.
