Question

Will my son be eligible for the stimulus 1 and 2 if I claimed him in 2019 but he is claiming himself in 2020? He is 23. Turbo Tax just added it to his refund.

Yes, if your son was not your dependent for tax year 2020, then he is eligible for both the first and second stimulus when he files his 2020 return and claims the Recovery Rebate credit.

Are you asking because you already received a stimulus 1 and 2 payment for your son last year? If so, there are lots of questions about this with no answers from the IRS at this point.

If your son didn't receive his stimulus payment(s) by the time he files his tax return, he can make an adjustment on his 2020 tax return for the first two stimulus payments.

To do this in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Enter the information in your return.
  2. Click Federal Review at the top of your screen.
  3. On the screen, Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click Continue.
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to.  This will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.
