Question

Why does turbo tax insist that the withholding agent's SSN box must be blank on a California 592-B?

I'm trying to E-File and it won't let me past this "review".

There absolutely needs to be a SSN/ITIN number there.  I've tried it with and without the dash after the first two digits.

It says "Form 592-B (Trustee Name): W/H agent SSN should be blank.

If you hit continue is says:
Form 592-B (Trustee Name): W/H agent SSN is not in a valid range for State Electronic Filing. The social security number (SSN), individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) or adopted taxpayer identification number (ATIN) must be in a valid range and all digits must be numeric.

Yes. I've tried that as well as trying it in the IE, Chrome and Firefox browsers.  I even switched to a different computer that I had never logged in from before.

I'm pretty sure this is a validation error.

I had the same problem and actually got it to go through! What you have to do is make sure the FEIN is entered in both the upper and lower boxes (with the dash). You'll then get an error message that says that the upper box must be blank. Leave it blank and hit enter. You'll get another error message that says the entry isn't in the correct range and asking you to re-enter the FEIN again. DON'T do it. Leave the box blank and hit "Continue" and it should go through.

Yes, this worked.  It's September 30, 2023 and TT still didn't fix this on 2022 returns for CA?  Kinda sh**ty, TurboTax.  So, I put in both xx-xxxxxxx in the SSN and also in FEIN box.  Error message that SSN isn't in range. So, I blanked it out.  Then error message that it couldn't be blank, WHICH I IGNORED.  And it efiled.  I had already tried processing with SSN blank to start with (which is correct), but it wouldn't file. So this is the hoop I needed to jump through.  You suck, TurboTax but thank goodness for this community!!
