Why do I need to file state and federal taxes for me and my wife. I only get S/S we get together $31608.00 my wife is68 and I am 73

If you have no income but that, including IRA withdrawals, etc., then there is no need to file and no benefit to doing so.  I'm assuming you are both covered by Medicare.

Most states do not tax SS.  So you don't need to file a state return either.


Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia do tax SS  In some cases, taxation may vary by adjusted gross income or other criteria, so you need to check that state's rules.
