Why am I getting less than last year? I know I didn’t clam any one but I made more then last year

Can the state take money from my returns if I owe the state money?

A great way to find out what happened is to make a line by line comparison of this return and the prior one(s).

If you owe they will take.

Yes, state government agencies can take current taxes owed from your federal refund. The Treasury Offset Program allows the state to intercept your refund without your permission. The Internal Revenue Service can also seize state income tax refunds to collect delinquent federal income taxes in most states and the District of Columbia. The state will give you notice of the levy, and the IRS will also give a notice, after the levy, offering you the opportunity to appeal the debt offset.

 

This may not happen for the current year because by filing early enough the IRS will send you the federal refund while the state has to wait until the payment due date to see if you pay.  however, if you owe back taxes most likely your federal refund will be taken.
