When recreating '17 tax return in Turbotax17 (bc I lost my .tax17 file ver.) what do I do at the end of the recreation and its "time to e-file" which I have done already

You should have the option to switch from "e-file" to "print and mail your returns."  Select the option to print and mail your return and then proceed through the rest of the prompts.  This will make the program think that you are filing that return and it will become the new .tax2017 that you can use for next year.  (You don't have to actually print it if you don't want to for this to work, but I would recommend printing it for your records at least).
