When I download turbotax desktop, is payment taken from my refund?

No. With the Desktop program you pay first with a credit card. Then you can do unlimited returns and efile 5 federal for free. You get 1 free state PROGRAM download to prepare state returns. Then each state return is $20 to efile or you can print and mail state for free. You can have the state efile fee deducted from a federal refund for an extra service charge but it's expensive.

.....if you need a state tax return, Desktop BASIC does not include one free state download.

Buy Deluxe or higher if you need a state to file.......and for Deluxe, if you buy from someone other TTX, 3rd party providers (like Amazon) also have a Deluxe version without one free state download, for those folks living in non-income tax states.

Oh and another thing.....in the Desktop installed program you can buy a lower version. All the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions. Desktop also has many other features and advantages over the Online version. You can do more than 1 return. You can see and enter into the actual forms. It has a What-If worksheet.
