Reference 9021 is the IRS code for math errors.

This code means that the IRS has found a math error in your return and will adjust your refund (or tax due).

Since the TT program doesn't make math errors then this means you made a data entry error in the program ... the 2 most common ones this year would be what you entered for the advance stimulus payment or the advance child tax credit and the IRS disagrees with your entries.   When the letter of explanation arrives you will know what it was that they changed.

So,

Can the changes be reversed there claiming things untrue for agi and dependent when I have neither a dependent or made over 75k

So I got this message too, and I’m really upset to say the least.  Since the message wasn’t personalized to me: like they mentioned I made errors , which is not true. Or some child tax exempt thing- which I never checked that box. Or it was I’m not eligible for the rebate tAx stimulus money, which is false- I got a letter in January telling me I qualify for a $1400 recovery rebate.  My tax return has to be one of rhe easiest returns to process.  I have no kids , I don’t own a business or a house, I don’t have foreign bank accounts or earned money overseas. No military , no donations, I didn’t claim anything but  the money I earned the tiny amount it was.  I’m getting crooked here- and I’m going to get to the bottom of this.

I’m just real upset about this whole deal.  It’s amazing I read during the pandemic Nigerian hackers were getting stimulus payments and they’re not living in the US.  And I have the most basic not claiming anything extra on my tax return .  Not sketchy one bit . And they can’t figure out that I didn’t receive the 3rd stimulus?  I’m just flabbergasted; the IRS sent me a letter.   in Jan. Telling me I qualify.
This kinda of stuff always happens to me - not this time I’m real upset and not going to take their crummy response.

@Masongrah - did you receive a refund less than you were expecting? there may be no need to adjust anything.. but we need a little more information to help you out.

Most every time someone posts and says they received less of a refund than expected, it relates to either the Child Tax Credit or the Recovery Rebate Credit (stimulus).  if so, there is nothing for you to adjust and I help explain what the error was....

1) how much EXACTLY did the IRS adjust your tax return by?

2) what is on Line 28 of Form 1040?

3) what is on Line 30 of Form 1040?

Adjusted Gross Income is Line 11 of Form 1040.....

Hello all, did anyone get this 9021 resolved ?

I filed my tax for 21 late and was expecting a refund of a couple of thousands. I got 9021 with 165 refund instead.

I am really upset and would love to hear from someone.

Thanks

Form 9021 means there was an error on your return, with your numbers, that the IRS was able to catch by comparing your return information to the information they already had for you.

For 2021, there were two common errors people made that caused their returns to be a lot less than they were expecting. You should have received a letter from the IRS telling you why your refund amount was changed.  The two most common reasons were:

  1. You did not enter that you received the stimulus payment in TurboTax, so your return said you were getting the money back, but the IRS caught it and said, no, you already received it.
    • If you look at line 30 of your 1040 and it shows an amount there, and you already received the $1,400 per person last year when they sent out the stimulus payments, this is likely the reason.
  2. You did not report the full amount of your Advanced Payments for the Child Tax Credit that you already received.  Again, the IRS will catch this and make the changes to your return.
    • This you can see on line 28.  The amount on that line if you receive the Advance Payments should be one half of what you were eligible for.  If you had 2 kids under 6, you would have been eligible for $7,200 so the correct number would be $3,600 on line 28 if you received Advance Payments.  If it shows $7,200, then you did not enter your advance payments which is why the IRS changed your return.

Another possibility is that you entered your W2, 1095-A or other tax form incorrectly.  If you would have entered that your employer withheld $8,900 instead of $890, this would cause a large change in your refund as well.

To get a specific answer for if neither of the above apply to you, then you would need to contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 as they are the only ones who can tell you exactly why they made the changes the made.
