Question

What do I do if my childrens’ father claimed them last year and got the advanced child tax credit payments but I am claiming them now?

If you are the one claiming them for 2021 then you get the full amount of the 2021 child tax credit.   Their dad may or may not have to re-pay the amount he received in advance, depending on his income.   That is why people who knew they would not claim a child for 2021 were given the chance to "opt out" of getting those advance payments.

You will see the CTC on line 28 of your Form 1040.

So even though he got the advanced payments, I check “No” that I didn’t get them?

Yes, check "No" because you didn't get the Child Tax Credit payments, your children's father did.

@karinelson7 You will be able to claim the full amount of the Child Tax Credit for your child on your 2021 tax return even if the other parent received advance Child Tax Credit payments. The other parent should have unenrolled from receiving advance payments, but their decision will not affect your ability to claim the Child Tax Credit. Per IRS.

TurboTax will automatically calculate your Child Tax Credit as you go through the dependent section of TurboTax. The Child Tax Credit is a tax credit you can claim for each qualifying dependent child on your return.
