Turbotax premier 2025 on MacBook cannot import a 2024 tax return file created on Windows

I had a Windows 10 laptop. I was a customer for turbotax premier desktop for many years. Decided to change my laptop to a MacBook Pro M5 this year. Copied over my 2024 return file from my Windows file system onto my mac Document folder area. Fired up the 2025 turbotax desktop for mac to import the 2024 return. The app cannot do it. It identified the file and allowed me to select it. When I attempted to press the continue button, it gave a small blip sound feedback and then nothing. I could not find any error code/window, or anything telling me what went wrong. Please help.

There are different steps to follow to use a tax file (.tax) versus a PDF. Your Mac should be able to convert the 2024 return in either format for use with the 2025 Mac program. Please see below and in this article:

If you have the .tax file for 2024:

On your PC, find last year's tax file and copy it to a removable device like a thumb drive or flash drive.
On your Mac, copy the tax file from the device to your desktop.
Open TurboTax for Mac and choose File New Tax Return.
Select Begin.
TurboTax will search for 2024 tax return files on your computer and should find it. If it doesn't, select Find your tax return.
Wait for TurboTax to finish transferring the information over.

If you have the PDF soft copy of a 2024 return created in non-TurboTax software, you might be able to transfer from the PDF.

some folks are having issues carryover 2024 from Mac to Mac let alone Win to Mac it may be similar issue, you can try this workaround... instead of Start New Return/Begin etc, use File / Open Tax Return and select the .tax2024 file. It will detect this is from prior tax year and ask you if you want to carry it over into a 2025 return. See:

Thanks for the help. I actually resolved the issue after i posted the question. It appeared that my turbotax 2025 mac desktop version was unresponsive so i forced quit the app. Afterwards, I fired up the app again and then attempted to import my 2024 tax return file and then it worked! I later successfully imported two more 2024 return files to prepare for additional 2025 returns.

Having the same issue. Trying to import the .tax2024 file which is on my mac locally. I copied it from my nas which is where it was saved from the windows desktop version of Turbotax last year. I can still open turbotax 2024 and read that file and it reads fine, so it's not corrupted or anything.

When I select the file, it just beeps and does nothing.

Restarting the app fixed it. This will be my last year using TurboTax. I was not happy having to switch to a mac. My windows 10 machine is supported by microsoft with security updates until the end of the year. Every other major tax software maker still runs on Windows 10.
