Yes, you can file a return with no W-2 form, but since most people have one, the program will ask you for one.

If this is the first year you used TurboTax, or you started a new account rather than rolling last year's information forward, you can select I don't have a W-2 when the question comes up.

I If you have last year's information in your return, you will need to delete the W-2. This is how to do that:

  1. Open you return.
  2. Select Federal, then Wages & Income.
  3. If you see questions about your income, answer them until you get to the screen titled Wages & Income.
  4. To the right of Job (W-2), select Edit/ Add.
  5. Select the trash can icon below the W-2 information to delete it. Repeat if you have more than one.
  6. Select Continue to return to the Wages & Income screen.

There are almost two dozen kinds of 1099's.  If you tell us what kind you have, we can be more helpful in telling you where to enter it in the software.   1099NEC?   SSA1099?  1099R?   1099DIV?   1099INT?  1099Misc?   1099B?   etc etc etc.
