You live in a state that requires you to have health insurance; if you do not have health insurance you are subject to a penalty when you file your state tax return.

States that have mandates for health insurance

The only places with an individual mandate for health insurance are:

    • California
    • District of Columbia
    • Massachusetts
    • New Jersey
    • Rhode Island
    • Vermont

Qualifying plans, exemptions and penalty criteria differ by state, so it’s important to make sure you know the fine print of your state’s system.

This is not reasonable by any stretch of the imagination. At that point, it should be illegal to not live without health insurance if you’re FORCED to either pay for it or get fined and ultimately still pay as if you did have it all along. In what way does gambling on my personal health cause a $1,000+ charge??? That’s way out of line and totally illogical. At most, $50-$100. And even then, it’s still unreasonable. Where is this fee charge coming from?

@realdanjamroz That is a question to ask the members of the legislature in your state.
