I haven't done my taxes in over 15 years, so I decided to hire a tax specialist I found online. I know there are  plenty of variables but does $8950.00 sound reasonable?

It depends. Generally, fees range depending on the complexity of your return and the forms needed, as well as your location.

You may have found them "Online", but are they a local area professional tax preparer, in an established office location,  you can meet in person to provide documentation?

You should get a lot of "independent" references to trust someone you can't  actually visit to work with in-person.

What is $8950? Your refund, tax due, fee for the provider, income reported?

Yes an $8950 "refund" is possible, if you have qualifying children; thanks to "refundable" tax credits, child tax credit, earned income credit, medical premium tax credit, education credit.
