Hello,

I am a F-1 student, currently on my OPT. I have been in the US for more than 5 calendar years so I am considered as a resident alien. I graduated last December 2023. I got my 1042-S with income code 20, chapter indicator 3, exemption code 04(box 3a) and 15(box 4a). IRS has received my Form 8233 for Tax Year 2023 in March 2023. I am trying to report my W-2 and Form 1042-S, but I am not able to report Form 1042-S. Any guidance about how to report 1042-S would be appreciated. Thank you.

To clarify, is year 2023 your 5th and final year of exemption? if possible, tell us the date you enter the US for the first time as a F-1 student.

I first came to the US with F-1 visa in August 2017. I went to a university from 2017-2021 and a graduate school from 2022-2023.

Yes, here is how to report your 1042-S.

  1. Log into your account
  2. Select Wages and income>other income
  3. Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099>start
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page to Other Reportable Income
  5. Other taxable income, answer yes
  6. Describe the income as 1042-S income and then the amount.

Now, I have a question for you. Since you are a resident alien for the 2023 tax year, why did you file form 8233? This is a form filed by non-resident aliens  to claim exemption from withholding on compensation for personal services because of an income tax treaty or the personal exemption amount. Please select the IRS link I have provided below for more information.
