Refund for 2018 less than 2017. No changes but used 1040A for 2017 & 1040 for 2018. Is this why refund considerably less?

Form 1040A no longer exists. The only 1040 for 2018 is a new 1040 that everyone is required to use. This has nothing to do with why your refund is less. Many things can affect a refund including how much income and withholding you had, what credits you are eligible for and how they were affected by a change in income. The only thing you can do is to look at your 2017 and 2018 tax returns and try to figure out what changed. If you withheld more during the year, then you got the refund in each pay check with more take home pay instead of getting it at tax time.
