Property taxes: what year to claim multiple payments?

Our 2022 residential property tax is paid in two parts: half is paid in 2022; the other half is paid in 2023.

We will claim the half that is paid in 2022 on our 2022 taxes. When do we claim the half of our 2022 property taxes that is paid in 2023 – on our 2022 taxes or our 2023 taxes?

If the second half is paid in 2023 then you will deduct that payment on your 2023 tax return.  Only taxes actually paid in 2022 can be deducted on the 2022 tax return regardless of the tax year for the taxes owed.

Along with what @DoninGA stated, if you paid the second half of 2021 property taxes in TY2022 be sure to add that to your 2022 itemized deductions as well.
