Question

Paid no federal taxes last year?

Last year, my employer withheld no federal taxes, which never happened before. I don't recall changing anything on my tax forms, and have worked for this employer in this role for the last five years. I tried to go back in and change my withholdings but nothing changed. how do I figure out what's wrong?

It is a major red flag if your federal withholding suddenly hit $0 after years of being consistent. Here are few steps to identify why no federal taxes are being withheld from your paycheck.:

Request your "W-4 Settings" from Payroll: Don't just look at your paystub. Ask HR for a copy of the actual data they have on file for you. Sometimes, during software updates, old "allowances" get converted incorrectly into the new system (e.g., 2 allowances might accidentally become a $4,000 credit).

Check for the "Exempt" Flag: Review your paystub and any payroll records for the word “Exempt.” If this was selected at any time in the past, it may still be active and would result in zero federal tax withholding.

To force the system to start withholding again, log in to your payroll portal and submit a new form with these entries:

  • Step 1: Enter your correct filing status
  • Step 2: Leave blank (unless you have multiple jobs)
  • Step 3: Enter $0-Setting this to zero removes any "credits" that might be wiping out your tax).
  • Step 4: Leave blank

Since you’ve gone a full year with $0 withheld, you likely have a tax bill waiting for you. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator -It will tell you exactly how much "Extra Withholding" you need to add to Step 4(c) to catch up for the rest of this year and avoid a massive surprise next April.

@kzirpolo  For 2025?   Then did you end up owing a lot on your 2025 tax return?   Or haven’t you filed it yet?   Did your employer take out the mandatory Social Security and Medicare (FICA) taxes?   Boxes 4&6 on your W2.

You should talk to your employer.   Maybe they changed you to be an independent contractor on a 1099 instead of W2.
