My son lives in MA, but he is a college student in PA and earned a small amount of income through part time job at his college.  Does he need to file a PA tax return ?  If yes, would it be as part year resident or non-resident ?  Please advise.   Thank You

You son, as your dependent, is considered temporarily absent from home for schooling.   He would first need to complete his federal return.

Then complete a PA non-resident return.  If his only PA sourced income was from wages, he likely will have a zero balance return.  Easily can be done on paper and mailed in.  https://www.revenue.pa.gov/FormsandPublications/FormsforIndividuals/PIT/Documents/2017/2017_pa-40.pdf

Then complete a MA return reporting all income to his resident state, if he required to file a MA return, I am not familiar with MA requirements.  https://www.mass.gov/service-details/who-must-file-a-state-personal-income-tax-return
