Question

My fiance filed a return to be eligible for the stimulus package, but she only made $3000.00. My return has been rejected because I claimed her. Can I fix this?

She lives with me and I support her, but I think she probably clicked that no one else can claim her by accident on her return

you can claim her if all these tests are met.

Qualifying Relative
1) she lived with you for the entire year of 2019
2) her gross income for 2019 less than $4,200
3) you provide over ½ hers support
4) she isn’t a qualifying child of another taxpayer

number 1 may be the one test that is failed in which case you can't claim her

if you meet all these tests you will have to paper file and she will have to amend to indicate she could be claimed as a dependent.

If you qualify to claim her under the IRS rules, then file a paper return and claim her as a dependent. This will bypass the e-file rejection. This will also start action on the part of the IRS to determine who qualifies to claim the dependency exemption. The IRS will contact you and your fiance by mail and request information to prove who qualified to claim the dependency exemption. This process can take months, though.

In the meantime, I recommend that she does not spend the stimulus payment she receives.
