Solved

My daughter's college sent me a 1098-T but their policy is to not enter a number in Box 1. They told me how to calculate the number. Can I enter the number I calculate?

The TurboTax instructions say to only enter a number directly from Box 1 of the 1098-T form.

No. If  box 1 on your 1098-T is blank. leave it blank.

You claim the tuition credit,  based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T. In the 1098-T screen, click on the link "What if this is not what I paid the school" underneath box 2. You will then be able to enter the actual amounts paid. Later the interview will allow you to enter books and other course materials.
