Question

My 19 year old college student worked and made $3200 in income. Do I file his return with mine or does he file his own? He had $13.47 in federal tax withheld. thanks,

Does he even have to file, since they only took out $13.47 in withholdings?

He can file if he wants a refund of the amount from box 2 of his W-2.

    MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB

If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return.  He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.  (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!)

If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.

Your son would have to file his own tax return to report his income even if you claim him as a dependent.  He would not required to file because his income is only $3200 (he would be required to file if his earned income was more than $14,600).  He would be able to file to get a refund of the $13.47 withheld.
