My 17 year old dependent had his first job this year. He made under $2800 this year. Should he file a return?

    It depends- if he only had earned income under $14,600 he is not required to file a return.  However, if he had withholding, he can get a refund if he files a return.

    Not a tax answer, but you might consider funding a Roth IRA for him.

     

    We did so for our minor son (with me as Custodian).
