Form 1040-SR line 6b is incorrectly calculated by more than $66,000.

This resulted in a tax bill instead of a refund and of course 6% interest.

No the new 6,000/12,000 Enhanced Senior Deduction on 1040 line 13b is completely separate from the Social Security calculations.   Nothing about Social Security has changed.   Up to 85% can still be taxable.   If you got 0 on line 6b it's usually because you answered the Living in a Foreign Country page wrong.  And you needed to answer for each spouse.

Did you get 0 on line 6b instead of the taxable amount?  Did the IRS say it should be 66,000 or is that the gross total of your SS on 1040 line 6a?

A common reason could be the Foreign question. Go back through the Social Security questions. Right after you enter the SSA-1099 is a screen asking if you lived in a foreign place. People have been answering it wrong or skipping it. Answer should be No.  And it is for each spouse if filing Joint.  If the IRS adjusted your return for missing the taxable Social Security you do not need to amend for that.

The former.  My AGI was incorrectly calculated by $66,000.  It seems the programming thought all Social Security income was tax free rather than the limit ($12,000 for joint filers).

@DRadliff   Line 6b has been a problem.   Did you read my prior answer?  People haven't been answering the Foreign question right or skipping it.  It was the very next screen after you entered the SSA-1099.
