Is there another way I need to fill out box 1 and 2 of my 1098t form? My form for box 1 is $6,900 and box 2 is $7,900 but it will not let me file this way, what do I do?

According to the IRS instructions for the 1098-T form, Box1 or Box 2 is supposed to be reported but not both. Your school made an error if you have values in both boxes. You could:

  • Contact the school and inquire regarding which box value is correct
  • Select one box value or the other that most closely reflects either the payments you actually made or the tuition that you were billed.
