I am filing Married Filing Separately. My husband is a nonresident alien (NRA), has never had an SSN or ITIN, and is not required to have one. We have always filed this way. How can I continue in TurboTax without entering an SSN or ITIN?

if the SSN or ITIN isn’t entered, you can continue to use TT (enter a dummy ITIN: 111-00-1111 or something similar), but you’d have to paper file.

use a dummy ITIN and paper file.  It’s not that the IRS won’t accept a tax return with a dummy ITIN, it’s that the efile system requires a valid ITIN / SSN.

@intuit_ae921e757956 , agreeing with my colleague @NCperson  but wanting to add :

  1. You prepare the return in TurboTax using a dummy SSN  ( 520-23-4567 or similar), just to satisfy  TurboTax processing.
  2. When all done, choose file by mail, and print the return
  3. Using sno-pake ( or similar) remove the dummy SSN and replace with  “N  R  A”
  4. Sign, Date and post the return ( with any required attachments) to the IRS address for your area.

BTW --- just out of curiosity, where is your tax home ;  if the USA, are you filing  MFS only to keep your husband’s income out of US ?   This has no bearing on  your filing.

Is there more one of us can do for you ?
