If my husband had no income should I claim him as dependent and file single?

You still have to file Married, but you can file separately and claim him if he                          

  • Had no gross income,
  • Isn't filing a return, and
  • Wasn't the dependent of another taxpayer

Technically, a spouse is not a dependent, but you can claim his exemption.
