Question

If I was considered "head of household" for only part of the year - the first half, should I still file as head of household?

The situation is that I paid for more than half the upkeep, including the mortgage payment, for my mother (who did not live with me) who would be considered a qualifying relative. She then became employed, and no longer needed my help. Should I claim head of household?

No, you should not. To qualify for Head of Household, you must have provided more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the entire year, not partial.  Your mom doesn't have to live with for the full year, but the support test must be met for the entire year.
