After you get your refunds from IRS and the state you can file an amended tax return to change your marital status to "Head of Household".   You will be able to amend the return thru TurboTax on Feb 22nd when IRS comes out with the form 1040X.

Make sure you qualify for Head of Household.  You must have these requirements:

The qualifying person must be one of the following to qualify for Head of Household status.

  • Your child (including legally adopted), stepchild, foster child, sibling, half-sibling, step-sibling, or a descendant of any of them (for example, your grandchild or niece)
  • Your mother or father, if you're qualified to claim them as a dependent (even if you're not claiming them as such) OR
  • A relative related by blood, legal adoption, or marriage other than a parent (child, sibling, grandparent, nephew, aunt, step-parent, in-law, etc.) AND lived with you for more than half the year AND that you're able to claim as a dependent (even if you're not claiming them as such).

And if I don’t have any dependents? I still qualify as head of household right?
