Question

I was a primary caregiver for my father last year as he had advanced Alzheimers. He paid me $1054 a week for 27 weeks before he passed away. How do I report that income

You would report that income as Other Income on your tax return.

To enter Other Income, please follow the steps below:

  • Open your return.
  • Click on Income & Expenses.
  • Scroll to the bottom under Less Common Income, and select Start (or Update) for Miscellaneous Income.
  • Choose Other reportable income at the bottom of the list and start

Please see this IRS article about Family Caregivers and Self-Employment Tax. The income that you received as a primary caregiver is not subject to self-employment tax.

Thanks so much! I originally thought I had to do a 1099 but this is easier and straight forward,
