Solved

I want to self-report a $300 BOA checking signup bonus. No 1099-INT issued (under $600). TurboTax asks for FEIN for 1099-INT, but I don’t have one. How do I enter it?

This should be posted to Less Common Income in TurboTax.

  1. Select Wages and Income.
  2. Scroll down. There may be a button to see additional options.
  3. Scroll down and click Less Common Income
  4. Select Miscellaneous Income
  5. Scroll down to Other reportable income
  6. Any other taxable income? - Yes
  7. Any other taxable income?  [+ Add]
  8. Complete the interview

Don't create a fake 1099-INT.  Just enter this as miscellaneous "other income" not on a 1099.  Or you could enter it as interest but when you enter the name of the bank, check the box for "I did not get a 1099 for this money."

Hi,
Thank you for sharing this.
I think this can work, however, as I moved forward, it asked me to upgrade to deluxe version instead of standard free version which doesn't make sense.
Is there a way out of keep it within free version as I don't have a complicated tax filing except fro this specific sign up bonus without a 1099.

BofA should be issuing a Form 1099-INT by the end of January.  The reporting threshold is $10, not $600.

or use  a fake eIN since it's not reported to the IRS like 36-1234567

No, I wouldn't do that.  I'm not convinced the 1099 isn't included in the XML transmission file.  I think the account opening bonus is 1099-MISC income anyway, not 1099-INT.  But either way, should be reported as misc other income not on a 1099.

Not sure why misc income triggers a need to upgrade past free.  Did you accidentally add it as business (self-employment) income?

When you report something as "Other Income" it first appears on Schedule 1 before it goes to the Form 1040.  The Free Edition does not handle Schedule 1.     I'd wait to see what form BOA sends the filer by or after January 31.  A 1099 may (or may not) at some point become downloadable in the BOA online account, sometimes sooner than a mailed copy.
