I have not been able to e-file my CA State return without being forced to add Audit Defense.  I have not clicked the "Add Audit Defense" button, but TurboTax continues to include it and send me to the payment page.

That is only if you want to have the 24.99 state efile fee deducted from your federal refund.  You have to  remove the Premium service and pay the fee with a credit card.

I'm using TT Advantage (Desktop for Mac), in CA.  Despite opting out of Audit Defense and selecting Pay by Credit Card for the state e-file fee, I was being forced to register for Audit Defense.  The workaround is to e-file federal and state separately.  When you e-file the CA state alone (and chose Pay by Credit Card) it goes to a Confirm billing address rather than the Audit Defense registration screen.

First it's the credit card vs. refund snafu, and now it's the e-file together vs. separately snafu.  How do these people sleep at night?  Ask Congress to develop IRS tools so that people don't to file anything in simple cases and take Intuit's annual theft back.
