Question

I've completed my return and Turbotax says it's ready to file, however the Care Act $300 charitable deduction was left off. How can I override turbotax to add it?

I did enter my charitable donations, both under the itemized deductions section and in the designated box for the Care Act deduction. I've had the software review the return multiple times and it will only give me the standard deduction, it won't add the extra $300 from the donations. How do I fix my return to get the extra deduction?

Under CARES ACT, taxpayers who take Standard Deduction can take a charitable cash donations to a qualified non-profit organization up to $300 as adjustment to income.  To take the deduction in Turbo Tax:

  1. Under Federal Taxes, jump to Deduction and Credits.
  2. Under Federal Taxes, jump to Deduction and Credits
  3. Scroll down to Wrap up tax breaks, then continue past the page where TT say if itemized or standard deduction is best...on the next page (see below screenshot)
  4. In Tax Home Screen, click Tax Tools, then Tools.
  5. Under Tax Tools, click View Tax Summary, then Preview 1040.

This will put the $300 on line 10b in the preview my 10b of 1040 worksheet.

you should not be entering any amount directly on 10b. that's an override that prevents e-filing. TT does the calculation automatically if you enter your "money" i.e. cash contributions in schedule A but take the standard deduction.
