I received a state refund but later in the year I paid additional tax. Do I record what I received originally or do I substract the additional tax that I paid?

How do I record my original state's refund minus a subsequent paid tax on an amended state tax return?

You should report these separately. Include the full amount of the state refund you received (as shown on your Form 1099-G) as income on Schedule 1, but only if you itemized your deductions in 2024; if you took the standard deduction, that refund is generally not taxable and doesn't need to be reported.

The additional tax you paid later in the year should not be subtracted from that refund amount, instead, it is treated as a new deduction for the 2025. You can report this by navigating to Deductions and Credits, Estimates and Other Taxes Paid > Income Taxes Paid > Other Income Taxes Paid in 2025 > Balance due on your 2024 state taxes paid in 2025.
