You need to gather your personal information.  That includes your social security number, the information on your spouse and dependents, You will need your income paperwork.  That includes the W-2 from your employer and any I099 statements from banks and investment companies.  If you have a home mortgage, you need that information and your property tax statements.

For a simple return, TurboTax will take you through step-by-step from entering your name through filing your return.  Most people are able to complete their taxes just by following the program.

For 2023 taxes you will need a computer with Windows or a MAC.  You will need to download the desktop program, and you will need to print and mail your return when it is completed.

It is too late for you to use online TurboTax for a 2023 tax return.    The only way for you to use TurboTax now is to use the CD/download desktop software----the "do-it-yourself" software-- on a full PC or Mac.   It cannot be used on any sort of mobile device.  The return cannot be e-filed; it must be filed by mailing it in.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
