I maintained permanant residency in New York but worked in ga from august to december and maintained an apartment there.

You file a GA non resident return, paying GA tax on your income earned while working in GA. You file a NY resident return, reporting all your income, and claiming a credit for the tax paid to GA.

That's the way it works in most states
