Question

I just realized my 2021 tax return was rejected. How do I file it now?

I e-filed my 2021 tax return and pretty much forgot about it. I just logged in to file my 2022 tax return and noticed my 2021 was rejected. I know I have three years to get my return but don't know how to file it at this point.

Since you missed the e-File window you have to file a paper return at the US Post Office.

E-filing is closed for 2021.  The only way to file 2021 is to print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in.  Expect it to take six to nine months to be processed.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
