I got an email saying there was an error with my 2016 tax return and want to know if this is real. I haven't clicked anything yet with it.

If there was an error with your 2016 tax return, assuming you filed your 2016 tax return, the IRS or your state would contact you by mail to inform you of the error. I suggest contacting the IRS and/or your state directly to see if there really is an error with your 2016 tax return. Don't use any links or phone numbers in the email you received.
