If your return has already been accepted by the IRS, then you will need to file an amended return to report this additional income. However, you will want to wait to mail your amended return until your original return has been processed to avoid delays. Please view the TurboTax FAQ below for instructions on preparing an amended return.

Note: You will need to mail your amended return. This type of return is not eligible for e-file.

If your return has not been accepted by the IRS, then you can follow the directions below to add your Form W-2G.

  1. Log in and click take me to my return (unless already in).
  2. Click the Federal tab on the left side of the screen.
  3. On the next page, scroll down to see all income and click Show More beside Less Common Income.
  4. Click the Start/Revisit tab beside Gambling Winnings.
  5. On the next screen, answer Yes to question, "Did you win money or prizes from gambling or lotteries during 2018"?
  6. On the next screen, answer Yes to the question, "Did you receive a W-2G"?

If the IRS has accepted your return as filed then you must amend your tax return once the IRS has had a chance to process it.

If your return is pending because the IRS has not yet begun accepting returns, you must wait to see if it is accepted or rejected.  If the return is rejected, this means it has not been filed, in which case you can update or change it before you resend it to the IRS.

You will be able to access and file an amended return once you find if the IRS did or did not accept your return (Form 1040-X).  Use the link here to check to see when available:

Be sure to read all the instructions carefully, before you begin, so that TurboTax knows the original numbers and the changed numbers for your amendment.
