I did not work last year so no w.2 do I still need to file

    If you did receive any income last year that could be taxable then you are not required to file a return.

     

    Be sure you did not earn any investment income that could be taxable, social security income that could be taxable, wages, retirement, rental or investment income, nor any other type of taxable income.

    I was told I should still file to get child credits  but did not understand how

    It depends.

     

    If you meet the requirements of the credit and need to file a tax return to get them, then yes you would file.

     

    However some credits can only be claimed if you have earned income and others would only apply if you have a tax liability due.
