I am retired, but not old enough for medicare. I have my own medical insurance but not from state marketplace. Where do I enter premiums for itemization?

In TurboTax, you enter these premiums in the Medical Expenses section of the Federal interview.

  1. Go to the Federal tab.
  2. Select Deductions & Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Medical and click Start or Revisit next to Medical Expenses.
  4. Answer Yes to the initial questions until you reach the screen titled "How much did you pay for health insurance?"
  5. Enter your total out-of-pocket premiums in the box labeled Medical Insurance Premiums.

Key Requirements for Itemization

  • TurboTax will automatically subtract 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from your total medical expenses. Only the amount above that number is deductible.
  • Because you are over 65 (or nearly there), your standard deduction—including the 2025 Enhanced Senior Deduction—is likely quite high. TurboTax will compare your total medical, tax, and interest deductions against your standard deduction and automatically choose whichever saves you more money.
  • Ensure these premiums were paid with after-tax dollars. You cannot deduct premiums if they were paid from an HSA or reimbursed by a former employer.
