I am going to claim my newborn instead of my girlfriend. Its asking her if she had a baby in 2022. Will that automatically make her claim the baby instead of me?

First year with a baby. We cant both claim right? So if i were to would she say no to the above question turbotax is asking?

If all of you are living together as a family , but are not legally married, then only one of you can claim the child. If you are the one claiming the child as a dependent then GF enters nothing at all on her return about the child. You can file as head of household and use the child as your qualifying dependent for that filing status. If GF files she has to file Single.

Awesome thank you. So as long as one of us files single we will be all set? And for the opening question this year asking if we had a child we can both answer yes, correct?

Those introductory questions seem to be confusing to some users. Your answers to those questions are not going on to your tax return but be careful so that they do not lead you into answering incorrectly when you start working on your tax return. GF cannot enter anything on her tax form about the baby if you are claiming the baby as your dependent. She needs to file Single and when it asks her if she supported anyone else she says no.
