As long as you haven't actually physically mailed it, you can change the filing method and efile.

NOTE:  Also during efiling it may ask you if you are a first-time filer; if so, indicate that.   If it doesn't ask you that, it may ask you for your 2024 AGI to verify your return.    If you did not file a 2024 return at all last year, and if no one (such as a parent) filed one for you in your name, then you'd enter a 2024 AGI of 0.

If you haven't actually filed (mailed) the 2025 return, you can open the return interview back up, make any corrections if needed, and change the filing method.

  • Log into your account, and at the Tax Home scroll way down, and look for a button/link "Add a State."
  • Click on "Add a State."  (That doesn't really add one; that's just to open the return.)
  • Once the return interview is open, if needed you can make any changes in your return you need to, since it has not been filed.
  • Then go through the REVIEW section to be sure everything is still in order.
  • Then go to the FILE section, progress through the screens there, and change the filing method to efile.
  • Then continue on answering all the remaining screens, and at the final step click a big button "Transmit Returns Now."
  • After submitting the return, you should get 2 emails--the first saying the return had been successfully transmitted, followed by a later one (24-48 hours or maybe much sooner) saying if the efile was accepted or rejected.
