Question

How to cancel an accepted e-file and switch to mail?

I filed my tax returns and sent them via e-file. Both the Federal and State ones were accepted. I then realized I had to attach a 1040-NR separately, which isn't supported by TurboTax so I can't use the amend option either. Instead I would need to (1) Cancel the e-file, (2) switch to mail file, and (3) create a 1040-NR separately, attach it to the original 1040 I made on TurboTax, and mail it off. I'm stuck on (1) though; how can I cancel an e-file that was already accepted?

Or, if possible, I was thinking of filling in a 1040-NR and sending that by mail. It won't be attached to the e-filed 1040, but would the IRS be able to connect those two?

Thanks for the reply Mike9241!

Have you heard or seen of any similar circumstances? Not sure what to do here - alternatively I thought of sending a 1040-NR separately by mail, but if that's also not an option I guess I'm stuck.

I recommend you call the IRS and tell them they need another form for your 2022 tax return and ask if you can upload it or do they have another preference. If they say that you can upload it, get the necessary information from the agent.

The IRS might prefer to send you a letter asking for the information. I would call 800-829-1040 or 800-729-1954 to be pro-active.
