Question

How do I receive renter's credit when TurboTax says I don't have credit? I meet MN's qualifications and the information I submitted is correct. I should receive $53.

In some versions of TurboTax, the Renter's Credit schedule doesn't "wake up" automatically unless a specific box is checked.

  1. Go to the "State Taxes" tab and select Minnesota.
  2. Navigate to the Credits section (often under "Other Minnesota Credits").
  3. Look specifically for Renter’s Credit (Schedule M1RENT).
  4. If you are using the Desktop version, go into Forms Mode (top right), find Schedule M1RENT, and look for an "Activation" or "Claiming" checkbox at the very top. Checking this often triggers the calculation.

2. Verify "Household Income" vs. "Taxable Income"

Minnesota uses a specific definition of Household Income for this credit that is different from your Federal AGI. TurboTax might be disqualifying you if it thinks your household income is too high. Check if you accidentally entered:

  1. Untaxable Social Security or pension benefits.
  2. Nontaxable interest.
  3. Worker's compensation.
  4. The Dependency Trap: If you marked that someone could claim you as a dependent (even if they don't), the software will automatically disqualify you for the credit.

3. Check the CRP (Certificate of Rent Paid) Entry

TurboTax requires the data from your CRP to be entered exactly.

  1. Ensure the Property ID number and Landlord's information are filled out.
  2. Make sure you haven't split the rent in a way that drops your "Rent Constituting Property Tax" below the state's minimum threshold for your income bracket. For 2025, the state assumes 17% of your rent goes toward property taxes.

4. It Might Already Be Included

Because of the new law, you will not see a separate check for $53 later this year.

  1. Look at your Minnesota Form M1.
  2. Check Line 12 or Line 16 (Refundable Credits).

More than likely, the problem may stem from a Certificate of Rent Paid. Did you enter this into the return?
